" I believe that the success of PINTAR programmes would become a model in enabling the spirit of 1Malaysia and towards creating sustainable human capital development for the country . "
Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak
Prime Minister
The underserved schools may be located away from the towns or cities but that does not mean that the students do not deserve a chance to be educated and groomed for success.
Increasing social issues and moral decay among the youngsters in these schools need to be addressed seriously. With these social concerns in mind, a meeting was held between the Government and Khazanah Nasional Berhad (KNB), Putrajaya Committee on GLC High Performance (PCG) and Pioneer Companies consisted of MAS, TNB, BIMB, CIMB MAHB, Maybank, Media Prima, MRCB, POS, PROTON, TM, Sime Darby, Uda Holdings, UEM Group, Guthrie, Affin Holdings and Island & Peninsular to discuss ways to foster the intellectual, cultural, physical, social, emotional and spiritual attributes of these students through quality teaching and learning in order to produce a generation of well-rounded individuals. The meeting also discussed about developing a framework between the government and corporate sectors to address these critical needs of the country.
How did the team begin with their efforts? Going back to the basics, education is undeniably the key to development and nation building. Working with and adapting principles from the Silver Book: Achieving Value Through Social Responsibility”, the team crafted a programme to build the capacity of such schools using the school adoption concept. Educational excellence, especially amongst the underserved, was made a high priority. Through a comprehensive series of feedback sessions with multinational corporations (MNCs), private sectors, corporations, principals, teachers, parents, community leaders, strategy partner consultants and education experts, the concept of PINTAR or “Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talent and Advocating Responsibility” was conceived.
On December 17, 2006 YB Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop launched the PINTAR pilot programme in Penang.
